Gulyaypolsky district

Gulyaipole city is located in the valley of the Gaichur River, which comes from Turkic "gai” - free, "chul” – steppe. Zaporizhzhia oblast’ centre is located 99 kilometres south of the city, it borders Dnipropetrovs’k obalst’ to the north, and Donets’k oblast’ to the east.

Gulyaipole was founded as a military sloboda (settlement) of the Dnirpo fortification line in 1785. It was divided into seven Cossack sotnias ("sotnia” – literally "hundred”, means a unit of several hundreds of Cossacks): Bochans’ka, Verbivs’ka, Pishchans’ka, Podolyns’ka, Khersons’ka and Goryans’ka. In 1923 Gulyaipole became a centre of the district.

At present, the city has population of 16.700 people and the district of 30.800.

20 agricultural and 50 farm enterprises operate in Gulyaipole district making Zaporizhzhia oblast’ a powerful agricultural region.

The city’s centre consists of the architectural ensemble of buildings connected with historical events and revolutionary activities of a legendary leader of the peasant movement Nestor Ivanovich Makhno in the south of Ukraine in 1918-192. The city is rich in history, and that is the reason why the Museum of Local Lore, residing in a historical building of a former credit bank, became an inseparable part of the Guliaypole centre.

The Museum was founded on 11 December, 1960.  Its exposition comprises 9 sections containing 17 thousand items. The Gulyaipole museum is a must see for guests of the city.

Every year the museum is visited by the representatives of Germany, Poland, Italy, Canada, America and France. A warm friendly relationship between the museum and France has developed, because it is the country where Nestor Makhno was buried. Each day foreign and local tourists come to see the museum exposition.

The greatness and glory of our steppe land is reflected in songs, folk epic and poetry.

Gulyaipole gave to Ukraine 14 members of Writers Union of Ukraine (M. Tardov - a veteran writer, L.Yukhvid and his book "The Marriage in Malinovka”; the following contemporary writers: G. Lyutyi – the Zaporizhzhia Oblast’ Organization of the National Writers Union of Ukraine director, V. Videnko and his truly popular song "Na dolyni tuman” ("Mist over the valley”), a poetess L.
